Bank of New York Mellon (BNY) became the primary reserve custodian for RLUSD, Ripple’s stablecoin, according to BNY’s own announcement. Ripple also acquired GTreasury, a corporate treasury management platform, and has framed Ripple Treasury around a specific pitch: letting corporate treasuries move money continuously, seven days a week, using stablecoins and digital assets including XRP.
Why Custody Is the Boring but Important Part
Stablecoins are only as trustworthy as the reserves backing them and the institution holding those reserves. A stablecoin issuer that self-custodies its own backing assets is asking users to take that trust on faith. Naming a large, regulated custodian like BNY for RLUSD’s reserves gives corporate treasury teams and compliance departments something concrete to check rather than a marketing claim about being fully backed.
The GTreasury Acquisition Fits a Pattern
GTreasury is treasury management software, the kind of system corporate finance teams already use to track cash positions, forecast liquidity, and manage payments. Folding that into Ripple’s stablecoin and digital-asset business gives Ripple a direct line into the software treasury teams already run on, rather than asking them to adopt a separate crypto-specific tool.
What This Doesn’t Prove Yet
None of this confirms broad bank integration or mainstream corporate adoption of stablecoins for treasury operations. It’s a custody relationship and an acquisition, both concrete and checkable, but the actual usage numbers, how many corporate treasuries are moving real cash through this setup, aren’t part of what’s been disclosed here. Treat this as infrastructure being built, not evidence that it’s already load-bearing at scale.
Where to Verify This
The BNY press release is the primary source for the custody arrangement. Ripple’s RLUSD page covers the stablecoin itself, and the Ripple Treasury page has more on the treasury management angle.
