A common assumption in crypto circles is that Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol, or CCIP, is what institutions will eventually use to settle transactions across chains. Based on what CCIP actually does and what’s already being deployed in production, that assumption doesn’t hold up.
What CCIP is actually built for
CCIP is genuinely well-suited to a specific job: moving data across chains, triggering smart contracts based on price oracles, and feeding information into contracts based on whatever conditions those contracts require. That’s valuable infrastructure. It’s also a different job than settlement. Institutions care most about frictionless, near-instant, final settlement, and CCIP wasn’t designed to be a payment rail. It’s a data highway.
What’s already live for settlement
Rather than debate this in the abstract, it’s worth looking at what’s actually running in production today. BankSocial is settling transactions in real time using Hedera and the XRP Ledger, and it’s already implemented with multiple credit unions. That’s not a pilot or a proof of concept; it’s live infrastructure handling real settlement.
Why specialization, not a single winner, is the more realistic outcome
Chainlink functions primarily as a price oracle. Hedera provides strong security and data management, and can also be used for settlement in that capacity. XRP is built around fast, low-cost value settlement. None of these networks need to be everything to everyone, and expecting one protocol to be the end-all solution for every function misreads how this space is actually developing. It’s shaping up to be a multi-chain environment where different networks handle the functions they’re actually good at, rather than a winner-take-all outcome where a single chain absorbs every use case.
The more useful question when evaluating any of these networks isn’t which one will “win.” It’s which specific job a given chain is actually solving, and whether there’s already real, verifiable activity behind that claim rather than just a roadmap. In this case, the settlement activity already happening on Hedera and XRP through implementations like BankSocial’s is a more concrete data point than expectations about where CCIP might eventually be used.
