Could Stellar Be Working Towards Payments for Outer Space

Here’s a speculative but genuinely interesting connection worth understanding, not as investment advice, but as a window into where some of the smartest people in tech are placing their attention. Jed McCaleb, who founded Stellar in 2014, also founded VAST, a private company that has said it intends to build a commercial space station, with a stated goal of eventually succeeding the International Space Station. VAST has partnered with SpaceX for launch services.

The dots people are connecting

Elon Musk’s Starlink network has thousands of satellites in orbit, with plans for significant further expansion, and a network of that scale eventually needs a way to settle payments, whether for data routing, bandwidth, or future commercial services, quickly and across borders. Traditional banking rails, with multi-day settlement and real friction costs, aren’t well suited to that kind of high-frequency, global micro-transaction volume. Stellar was built specifically for fast, low-cost cross-border settlement, which is the basis of the speculative thesis: that a network founded by the same person building physical space infrastructure could end up handling payment settlement tied to that infrastructure.

Adding another layer, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, is reported to be an advisor to Stellar. OpenAI has published research exploring how AI could optimize space operations and logistics, on the premise that autonomous systems operating in orbit need fast, irrevocable transaction settlement without waiting on human confirmation.

Why this is speculation, not a thesis you should act on

None of this is a confirmed roadmap. A founder’s involvement in two separate companies doesn’t mean those companies are building toward each other, an advisory role doesn’t mean a formal integration is planned, and “this technology would be useful for that use case” is a long way from “this is what’s actually happening.” Space infrastructure timelines slip constantly, and even if VAST and Starlink both succeed on their own terms, there’s no guarantee Stellar specifically becomes the settlement layer involved.

What’s actually worth taking from this

The genuinely useful takeaway isn’t a prediction about XLM’s price. It’s that the people building next-generation infrastructure, in space, in AI, and in payments, increasingly overlap, and watching where those overlaps form is a reasonable way to think about where technology is headed. Treat connections like this one as something to watch and verify over time, not something to act on financially without independent research and a conversation with a professional who understands your risk tolerance.
