Most blockchain networks throw around throughput numbers without explaining how they got there. Hedera actually publishes its methodology, and that’s worth a look if you’re deciding what to build on.
How Hedera calculates its TPS figure
Hedera’s own blog post on the calculation lays out what counts as a transaction on the network and how the throughput figure gets derived from live consensus data. That’s a different posture than most chains take, where the headline TPS number shows up in a pitch deck with no supporting math attached to it.
Independent tools you can check yourself
You don’t have to take Hedera’s word for it. Arkhia Metrics tracks live network statistics independent of Hedera’s own reporting, so you can watch throughput, transaction volume, and node performance without going through the company’s dashboards. Separately, developer Ed Marquez built an open-source TPS calculator on GitHub that reproduces the network’s stated methodology against live mainnet data. If you want to verify a throughput claim instead of repeating it, that repo is where you’d start.
Why this matters if you’re building
Throughput claims get thrown around constantly in this industry, and most of them are unverifiable from the outside. When a protocol documents its methodology and outside developers can reproduce the number independently, that’s a meaningfully different level of confidence than a marketing slide offers. For builders comparing Hedera against other layer-1 options, the ability to check the math yourself, rather than trust a headline figure, is the more useful signal. It won’t tell you whether Hedera fits your specific application, but it does tell you the team isn’t hiding how it arrives at its numbers, and that transparency is a reasonable proxy for how the rest of the documentation will hold up.
