What ISO 20022 actually is

ISO 20022 is an international standard (ISO 20022:2013, Financial services, Universal financial industry message scheme) that defines a common model for financial messages. Instead of every institution inventing its own format, ISO 20022 provides an agreed vocabulary and structure for payments, securities, trade services, and reporting. A key design point: the same underlying message model can be expressed in more than one syntax, historically XML and, increasingly, JSON.

Where APIs and JSON come in

The standards body published direct guidance on using ISO 20022 with modern web technology. The ISO 20022 and JSON implementation best-practices whitepaper (2018) helps implementers define RESTful web-service APIs with resources represented in XML and/or JSON, based on models already in the ISO 20022 repository.   • ISO 20022 is the shared data model and vocabulary: what a payment or trade instruction contains and how its fields relate.

Why this matters for cross-border payments

Cross-border payments have long suffered from thin, inconsistent data. Different networks truncated or reformatted information, which slowed reconciliation and compliance checks. The industry migration to ISO 20022 is meant to fix that by carrying fuller, structured data end to end. On the SWIFT network, the coexistence period during which older MT messages and newer ISO 20022 messages ran side by side ended on 22 November 2025 for in-scope cross-border payment messages, and further milestones (such as structured address requirements in November 2026) continue after that.

Consistency is the hard part. The Bank for International Settlements published a CPMI report, Harmonised ISO 20022 data requirements for enhancing cross-border payments (October 2023), that defines a minimum set of data requirements so institutions implement the standard the same way. It reflects a broad market consensus and encourages participants to align by the end of 2027. Without harmonisation, ISO 20022 can still be implemented inconsistently, which blunts the benefit.

The trade-finance angle

Trade finance depends on trusted records and interoperable workflows: who shipped what, under which terms, and whether the goods and documents match. Structured, machine-readable data is a prerequisite for automating those checks. The same standards work also feeds cross-border payment infrastructure projects, including the BIS Project Nexus blueprint, which uses ISO 20022 to help interlink domestic instant-payment systems. Development bodies frame the same goal from the policy side: the IMF and World Bank have documented technical-assistance approaches for modernising cross-border payment systems in developing economies.

This is also where distributed-ledger and tokenization systems find a practical role beyond speculation: they need the same trusted records and interoperable message formats, and ISO 20022 is the common language they can plug into. That is a technology-interoperability point, separate from any view on the price or investment merit of a given asset.
