Most crypto transfers today move a token from one wallet address to another with no verified identity attached. Traditional finance cannot work that way: a bank has to know who is paying whom, in a format its systems and its regulators can read. The LEI and ISO 20022 are the two standards that close that gap, and they are the reason a blockchain payment can start to look like real market infrastructure instead of an anonymous send.

What the LEI actually is

The Legal Entity Identifier is a unique 20-character alphanumeric code that identifies one legal entity and only that entity, anywhere in the world. It answers two questions: who is who, and who owns whom. The system is run by the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF), backed by the G20, overseen by the Financial Stability Board, and built on the ISO 17442 standard. The reference data is a public good, free for anyone to look up.

The LEI exists because of the 2008 financial crisis. In 2012 the G20 asked the Financial Stability Board to create a global identifier so regulators could see counterparty exposure in over-the-counter derivatives. The FSB’s implementation review documents how adoption spread from OTC derivatives into securities markets and a widening set of financial use cases.

What ISO 20022 does

ISO 20022 is the common language for financial messaging. Instead of the terse, rigid codes of the legacy SWIFT MT format, it carries rich, structured data: full party names, addresses, purpose codes, and identifiers such as the LEI, all in a format every institution can parse the same way. Swift retired the old MT messages for cross-border payments during 2025, with the coexistence period ending on 22 November 2025, so ISO 20022 is now the standard cross-border banking is built around. Put the two together and a digital-asset transfer can carry a verified organizational identity end to end. GLEIF’s own digital-assets work frames the core problem plainly: blockchains currently lack a reliable way to verify who is issuing, holding, or transacting an asset, especially across multiple ledgers. Its answer is the verifiable LEI, or vLEI, a cryptographically verifiable version of the LEI that a wallet, contract, or ledger can check automatically.

LEI plus ISO 20022 is one way to supply that identity layer, which gives distributed-ledger systems a role beyond speculation.
