AllUnity and Zebec announced a pilot putting EURAU, a euro-denominated stablecoin, to work on Stellar for employee benefits and enterprise payroll. That’s stablecoins doing an unglamorous but real job: paying people.
What the pilot actually covers
Payroll is a demanding test for any payment rail because it has to be reliable, predictable, and compliant with labor and tax rules in whatever jurisdiction the employees are in. Zebec’s own articles describe streaming payroll and enterprise payroll products built on Stellar, with this pilot extending that into euro-denominated stablecoin payments specifically. The appeal for an employer is straightforward: settlement that doesn’t depend on traditional banking rails or their cutoff times.
Why Stellar specifically
Stellar was built from the start around cross-border payments and asset issuance, so a payroll or benefits product built on it isn’t a strange fit. The Federal Reserve’s note on payment stablecoins and cross-border payments outlines the broader case for why stablecoins can be useful in exactly this kind of recurring, cross-border payment flow: predictable settlement, lower friction than correspondent banking, and the ability to move value continuously rather than in batches.
The limits worth stating plainly
One pilot with one enterprise partner doesn’t prove that stablecoin payroll will scale, and it shouldn’t be read as evidence of broad XLM adoption. Regulatory treatment of stablecoin payroll varies by country, and employer adoption tends to move slowly because payroll systems are risk-averse by design. The FSB’s global stablecoin recommendations and the BIS’s report on stablecoins in cross-border payments both flag oversight and reserve-backing as the open questions regulators are still working through.
What it means for Stellar
Stablecoin activity tied to a real operational use case like payroll gives a network more than a speculative trading story. Whether it becomes a meaningful share of Stellar’s transaction volume depends on whether more employers follow, which is a slow, unglamorous process to track.
