Why Your Utility Tokens Feel ‘Stuck’: XRP, HBAR & More

If you’re watching XRP, HBAR, and other utility-focused tokens sit flat while meme coins post huge short-term gains, the frustration is understandable. But flat price action and lack of progress aren’t the same thing, and it’s worth separating the two before you draw conclusions about either category.

Two different products, two different clocks

Meme coins are built for attention and speculation. Their value proposition is largely social: a token goes viral, trading volume spikes, and price moves fast in both directions. Utility-focused networks like XRP, HBAR, Algorand, XDC, and Stellar are built around a different premise, that enterprises and financial institutions will eventually route real transaction volume through them. Enterprise adoption cycles run on a much longer clock than social virality does, closer to how long it took large retailers to take e-commerce seriously in the 1990s than to how fast a trending post spreads.

That doesn’t mean utility tokens are automatically undervalued or that meme coins are automatically worthless. It means you’re looking at two different kinds of assets with two different growth timelines, and judging one by the other’s schedule will mislead you either way.

What adoption actually looks like

The adoption happening around these networks tends to be less visible than a price chart. SWIFT, which moves an enormous volume of payment messages daily, has piloted XRP for cross-border settlement testing. Hedera’s governing council includes companies like Google and IBM. XDC has been used for trade finance documentation by enterprises through networks like Singapore’s TradeFinance platform. None of that generates a headline the way a coin doubling overnight does, but it’s a different kind of signal, one about whether the underlying rails are actually being used.

Regulatory frameworks like the FATF Travel Rule and evolving bank capital rules are also pushing institutions toward assets and platforms that can meet compliance requirements, which tends to favor regulated, identifiable networks over anonymous, purely speculative ones.

What this means for how you evaluate a position

If you’re holding a utility token expecting it to behave like a meme coin, sideways price action will feel like failure. If you’re holding it as a bet on enterprise adoption playing out over years, the same price chart reads differently. Neither framing is automatically right, adoption theses can also simply not pan out, and utility narratives get overused in crypto marketing more than they should be.

The honest takeaway is to be clear with yourself about which bet you’re actually making, check the adoption claims against primary sources rather than secondhand summaries, and size any position according to how much uncertainty you’re comfortable holding.
