XRPL’s EVM sidechain: what it actually connects, and how

The XRP Ledger wasn’t built as an EVM-compatible chain, which has always been a real limitation for developers used to building with Solidity and the broader Ethereum tooling ecosystem. The XRPL EVM sidechain is Ripple’s answer: a parallel chain that speaks the EVM’s language, bridged back to the main XRP Ledger through Axelar.

How the bridge actually works

Ripple’s own writeup on the XRPL EVM sidechain describes the Axelar bridge as the connective layer that lets assets and messages move between the EVM sidechain and the main XRPL network. XRPL’s broader sidechains documentation covers the general architecture, and the EVM-specific developer docs, with the underlying code hosted publicly on GitHub, walk through the actual implementation for anyone building on it.

Why interoperability is the real story here

For Ripple and the XRP Ledger ecosystem, the value of a sidechain like this isn’t really about the sidechain itself, it’s about expanding where XRPL-native assets can move and what tooling can interact with them. A developer who’s built smart contracts for Ethereum doesn’t have to learn XRPL’s native architecture from scratch to build something that touches the XRP Ledger. That lowers the barrier for EVM-native teams to build with XRPL assets, which is a liquidity and integration story more than a technical curiosity.

What to check before building on it

Bridge architecture is one of the areas in crypto where the details matter enormously, since bridges have historically been a common point of failure and exploit across the industry. Anyone building on the XRPL EVM sidechain should read the actual documentation and understand exactly how Axelar’s bridge validates and relays messages, rather than assuming “bridged to XRPL” means the same security model as the main ledger itself.
